YMCA Launches FREE Little Library

The Don Sjogren Community YMCA launched its new FREE Little Library the week of August 5 with the help of summer camp participants.

The FREE Little Library will accept donations of new or gently-used children’s books from anyone in the community. Children can then browse the books and choose one or more books to take home and keep or return to the library.

The goal of the new library is to improve access to a variety of books for local children.

YMCA Branch Executive Director Janell Brown said the idea for the library came about from the Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) time during YMCA summer camp. Campers started to get bored with the same books by the end of summer. The library will increase the variety of books available for summer camp readers and for children outside of Y programs.

The FREE Little Library received its initial supply of books through donations from participants in the YMCA’s last day camp for the summer – Give It Away Camp. During the camp, children made cards for neighbors, picked up trash at ballfields and the North Park, made cookies to donate and took a field trip to the Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles in Lexington.

The FREE Little Library is located outside of the child watch area of the YMCA at 1415 Broadway so books are always accessible.
