Body & Soul Class Builds Faith, Strength & Friendship

The Body and Soul exercise class at the YMCA at Gothenburg Health encourages women to build stronger bodies, stronger faith and lasting friendships.

The Body part of the class incorporates strength training, cardio, drumming and core work into a routine that caters to people of all fitness levels. The Soul part of the class incorporates uplifting music and Christian Scripture to provide a boost to the spirit.

Instructor Heather Johnson said she enjoys watching her class participants, who range in age from 25 to 75, grow in strength and friendship.

Heather chooses a Bible reading or verse and shares it throughout the class.

Body and Soul class participant Polly Ackerman said Heather is an “amazing teacher” who motivates the class though the Word of God.

“While Heather teaches, she shares God’s Word and joyfully reminds us who we are in Christ,” Polly said. “And she plays fun, uplifting music! I truly enjoy being encouraged through God’s Word, the worship music and the energy Heather brings as she teaches! And of course, the drumming!”

Fitness drumming combines the simple movement of drumming into a cardio routine to create a full-body, music-centered workout.

“The class benefits me in so many ways,” Polly said. “Spiritually, physically, emotionally and mentally. I’m so thankful for Heather and her commitment to teach, encourage and love us.”

The Body and Soul class meets for 45 minutes at 9 a.m. each Wednesday. Group exercise classes are included in your YMCA membership. Members are welcome to join in the Body and Soul class or any group exercise class at any time for no additional fee.
