YMCA Staff and Volunteers served more than 1,000 FREE meals to help nourish kids this past summer at the YMCA Kids Café.

YMCA Executive Branch Director Janell Brown reported that 1,145 meals were prepared and served to children at this summer’s Kids Café program during June and July. The program invites children of any age to receive a free hot lunch each weekday followed games and activities.

“We are glad to have the opportunity to touch the lives of so many kids through this program each summer,” Brown said. “We are grateful to our sponsors, staff and volunteers who make this happen.”

Brown said that summer is a particularly vulnerable time for kids who rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year. That’s why the Y helps kids reach their full potential by providing free access to healthy meals when school’s out for summer.

In addition to YMCA staff, six volunteers gave a total of 84 hours to be sure that kids in our community had access to healthy and nutritious meals throughout the summer.

The First Presbyterian Church provided the kitchen and location for the café. Several other sponsors and donors have supported the program during its more than five years of existence.
