History

The YMCA of the Prairie was established in 2002 when it took over the operations of Health & Recreation Center (HARC). The former recreation center opened in 1996 in a building on West Fourth Avenue. In 2002, Holdrege voters passed a Sales Tax Initiative to help construct a new YMCA facility. Also in 2002, a Founder’s Campaign raised $550,000 to help pay start-up costs and hire an Executive Director for a YMCA. In 2003, volunteer campaigners began raising money to construct a new YMCA building. In September of 2006, the YMCA moved into its new 40,000-square foot facility at 1415 Broadway Street in Holdrege. Currently the YMCA of the Prairie serves more than 3,400 members.
